concept Design

Every five years Steinway & Sons develops their conceptual “Art Piano” series based on an idea or theme. Working with the executive marketing director, Five Ply was asked to interpret the underwater Diamond Stingray into a concept of what “could be” for the future of the piano line. Working with the sea going context, our design highlights the smooth surfaces and curvatures which exist in the creature's natural form, yet allows the functionality of the world-class musical instrument to shine through. Envisioned as a monoque carbon fiber “body” the shape and structure will be embedded in the outermost skin, allowing the soundboard to operate independently of the structure. Vibration testing, structural design and ergonomic studies all resulted in a sleek form which seductively embraces the pianist and allows for total acoustic clarity.
